The Community Based Fisheries Management (CBFM-2) project is the second phase of a ten year programme implemented by the Bangladesh Department of Fisheries with the assistance of the WorldFish Center's South Asia office as research and financial administration partners. The project was designed to test new ways of managing government owned and private fisheries in lakes (beels), rivers and floodplains.

CBFM-2 has established community management in 116 project sites all over Bangladesh, by 130 community based organisations (CBOs). 11 partner NGOs were involved in community development and support over the five year project period.

The Project, has been implemented through financial support from DFID and was scheduled to end in August 2006 - this has now been extended to March 2007.

The aim of this web-site is to act as a distribution point for project documents, reports and other resources.

The Department of Fisheries (DoF) is the implementing agency for the CBFM-2 project. It is the body responsible for management of Bangladesh's extensive network of fisheries resources and has District and Upazila offices all over the country. DoF has a long history of involvement in community based approaches to fisheries management, most recently with the Fourth Fisheries Project, CBFM-2 and MACH.

The WorldFish Center, established in 1977 as ICLARM, is an international non-profit research organization working towards improving the production and management of fisheries and other living aquatic resources to benefit the poor.

The WorldFish Center, started working in Bangladesh in 1987, in partnership with the Department of Fisheries (DoF) formally launching its Bangladesh office in 1989.
